Camera Control Units

About Camera Control Units

Camera control units (CCU) are used to remotely control operations such as zoom, panning, focus, and aperture. Camera control units (CCU) are typically installed in a control room or production area separate from a stage, studio area, or broadcast facility where the cameras are physically positioned.

Camera control units (CCU) are used to make remote adjustments to video cameras in a recording studio or stage area. The most common adjustments include white balance, or color temperature, which calibrates the video camera to a white object so that the color rendering of other objects is correct. Camera control units (CCU) may also adjust the aperture of the camera and make other technical adjustments. Controlling technical adjustments remotely allows the camera operator in the studio to pay closer attention to the composition of the scene. Camera control units (CCU) ensure that all cameras used are calibrated or adjusted to the same uniform standard. Camera controllers also serve as the interface between the camera and other studio equipment, including mixing boards or video switchers and power supplies. A video switcher is similar to an audio mixing console and can mix the video signals into a composite signal or add special effects.
